Research is needed to study the spread of HIV infection in the community, define the factors which place people at risk, study the natural history and pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS, monitor the personal, social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS, and study the efficacy of various intervention strategies. A Sub-committee was formed to promote and coordinate HIV/AIDS research in Indonesia. Around 60 research projects has been implemented in Indonesia to study the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS, understand knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to HIV/AIDS and develop interventions to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. This paper will review the important findings of the research projects and their relevance for policy development to prevent HIV/AIDS in Indonesia.
